Expansion of the Refial aluminium recycling plant
Refial, an aluminium scrap recycling company for the production of liquid aluminium and ingots, expands its plant located in the province of Alava to respond to the growing market demand with a second TRF and a Salt slag cooling system.
Integral solution
With the aim of increasing the plant’s production we supplied a 30 t tilting rotary furnace to process low quality scrap with a high metallic performance, similar to the one installed in 2015. We also supplied a salt slag cooling system, in collaboration and under the technology of Befesa, that increases the aluminium recovery by avoiding the oxidation of the aluminium contained in the slag.
The salt slag used in the two rotary furnaces is transported via conveyor belts to the cooler. After cooling under 400ºC, the powder is transported to the storage silos for subsequent processing at the salt recovery plants, and the largest aluminium pieces are placed in baskets to be recycled in the furnace.
The plant is highly automated, which allows manual functions to be reduced and therefore increases safety. Thanks to GHI’scutting-edge technology, the equipment allows for a high metal yield and high energy efficiency with different types of scrap.
The relationship between GHI and Refial began in 2010 with the supply of a turnkey plant with a 30 t tilting rotary furnace, two melting towers, two 25 t holding furnaces, transport ladles and its auxiliary equipment.

- Higher recovery of aluminium contained in the dross and salt slag
- Reduction in the cycle time
- Reduction in manual tasks in the plant
- High energy efficiency
- High level of automation
- Lower salt consumption
- Full integration with existing equipment
